Nimmala Warns Officials Over Delay In Veligonda Project Works

“The government’s determination alone is not enough. Agencies and officials must share that commitment”: Irrigation minister Nimmala Ramanaidu

NELLORE: Irrigation minister Nimmala Ramanaidu, on Wednesday, conducted his second inspection within a week of the Veligonda Project works, expressing strong displeasure over the delay in key restoration and dewatering operations.

Accompanied by a team of irrigation experts, the minister inspected the feeder canal breaches and twin tunnel dewatering works that were damaged during the recent Montha cyclone. He had earlier directed officials to complete the canal repairs and tunnel dewatering on a war footing but found that the progress remained unsatisfactory.

“The government’s determination alone is not enough. Agencies and officials must share that commitment,” Ramanaidu said sternly, warning that strict action would be taken against those failing to adhere to timelines.

He reiterated that the project must be completed by 2026, in accordance with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s target, and assured that he would personally monitor the progress until completion.

The minister instructed officials to immediately commence tunnel lining and benching works, and to begin feeder canal lining and retaining wall construction worth ₹456 crore within this month, ensuring completion before the next irrigation season.

“Completing the Veligonda Project will resolve the long-standing irrigation and drinking water issues faced by the farmers of Prakasam district,” Ramanaidu affirmed.
