NHRC seeks ATR on dy. mayor poll violence

The petitioner, YSR Congress party MP Dr Maddila Gurumurthy, urged authorities to uphold democratic rights and ensure justice in the matter.

Tirupati: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) directed the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh and the Director General of Police to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within four weeks on the alleged attack on elected representatives in Tirupati during the recent deputy mayor elections.

The petitioner, YSR Congress party MP Dr Maddila Gurumurthy, urged authorities to uphold democratic rights and ensure justice in the matter. According to the complaint, a violent attack took place on February 3 during the deputy mayor election of the Tirupati Municipal Corporation, targeting a group of elected representatives, including corporators and office bearers.
The complaint stated that two rowdy-sheeters allegedly led a mob that vandalised a bus carrying the representatives. The attackers reportedly smashed the windows, assaulted the driver, and deflated the vehicle’s tires. The incident unfolded in the presence of the police and was widely covered by the media, raising serious concerns over law and order.
Despite a formal complaint lodged with the superintendent of police, Tirupati, the names of the accused were not included in the First Information Report (FIR No. 18/2025) at SV University Campus police station. The Andhra Pradesh High Court had previously directed the police to provide security for the bus, further highlighting the lapses in security, the complainant said.
