Nellore Intensifies Road Safety Measures After 98 Accidents in Three Months
The collector stressed strict enforcement of traffic rules, particularly against wrong-way driving, and proposed seizure of vehicles found violating norms

Nellore: Following a spate of 98 road accidents reported over the past three months, district authorities in Nellore have stepped up enforcement and preventive measures to improve road safety and traffic discipline.
At a Road Safety Committee meeting held on Thursday at the Collectorate, district collector Himanshu Shukla and superintendent of police Dr Ajitha Vejendla emphasised the need for immediate measures to reduce road mishaps. Dr Vejendla presented a detailed analysis of accident data and suggested several preventive steps.
The collector stressed strict enforcement of traffic rules, particularly against wrong-way driving, and proposed seizure of vehicles found violating norms. He also called for urgent attention to accident-prone stretches, including the installation of speed breakers and radium markings to enhance visibility.
Officials discussed expediting pending infrastructure works on the Nellore–Krishnapatnam road and improving street lighting on major roads.
To ease congestion, APSRTC authorities were directed to ensure buses do not halt at entry and exit points of the RTC bus stand. Temporary parking arrangements near Krishnapatnam Port were proposed, alongside plans for permanent parking facilities.
Encroachments and street vending at key junctions — including Madras Bus Stand, RTC Bus Stand, Atmakur Bus Stand and Stonehousepet — were identified as major causes of traffic disruption. The collector directed the municipal corporation and traffic police to coordinate and address these issues.
Senior officials, including joint collector Mogili Venkateswarlu, ASPs Deeksha and Soujanya, municipal commissioner Nandan, RTO Madani and National Highways authorities, attended the meeting.
The measures aim to improve road safety, reduce accidents and ensure smoother traffic flow across the district.
