Nellore Civic Body On High Alert For Cyclone Montha Impact

Nellore: In view of the Cyclone Montha warnings, the Nellore Municipal Corporation has completed all necessary preparations to tackle any possible impact, Commissioner Y.O. Nandan said.

Addressing the media at his chamber on Monday, the Commissioner said special teams have been formed — one for every four wards — to take up precautionary measures and respond swiftly in flood-prone areas. Each team comprises officials from the Engineering, Sanitation, Revenue and Town Planning departments, along with ten support staff.

He said 14 flood relief and rehabilitation centres have been set up in municipal schools to accommodate people from inundation-prone areas. “All necessary facilities will be provided at these centres, and people will be safely shifted as required,” he assured.

Following the directions of municipal administration minister P. Narayana, ward secretariat staff have also been instructed to participate actively in relief operations under the supervision of administrative secretaries.

The Commissioner noted that desilting of major drains, taken up since August under the guidance of minister Narayana and rural MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy, has helped prevent water stagnation in most parts of the city. “Even during heavy rains, floodwater can now flow smoothly,” he added. A command control centre and helpline have been set up at the municipal office to assist the public during the cyclone. Residents can contact 0861-2356777 or 0861-2316777 for emergency help.
