NCSC Seeks Explanation Over Dy. Mayor Election Row
Acting on a petition from Tirupati Lok Sabha MP Dr. Maddila Gurumurthy, the commission issued a notice seeking an explanation within 15 days of receipt.

TIRUPATI: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) directed the Tirupati district collector and magistrate to submit a detailed report on allegations of human rights violations and electoral coercion during the election for the deputy mayor of the Tirupati Municipal Corporation.
Acting on a petition from Tirupati Lok Sabha MP Dr. Maddila Gurumurthy, the commission issued a notice seeking an explanation within 15 days of receipt. The NCSC warned that failure to respond within the stipulated period could lead it to exercise its civil court powers, including summoning the collector to appear before the commission in person or through a representative. The petition, dated March 7, 2025, alleged that several scheduled caste corporators were abducted, confined, and threatened to prevent their participation in the deputy mayor election held on February 3. Taking note of the complaint, the commission decided to conduct an inquiry under its constitutional authority granted by Article 338.
