A ‘Toilet Issue’ Rocks Bhopal, Rs 4-hike In Public Convenience Charge Sparks Protests

Bhopal: Congress workers staged demonstrations at the 25 public toilets run by Sulabh International here to protest the proposed hike in user charges by Rs 4, to Rs 10.

Congress corporator Yogendra Singh Guddu said said the the Mayor In-Council (MIC) of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) had approved a proposal to hike the charges for the use of the public convenience from Rs 6 to Rs 10” “The hiked charge is very insignificant for the BMC but it is a significant amount for the poor who use the service,” he said.

“It is ironic that the government is providing Rs 5 a meal to the poor people under the Deendayal Antyodaya Rasoi Yojana whereas the municipality body is taking the step to increase the toilet use charge to Rs 10”, he quipped.

MIC member R.K. Singh defended the move saying that the civic body was compelled to increase the fee since it was becoming very inconvenient for users to give loose change of Rs. Hence, it has been decided to revise the charge from to an even amount of Rs 10, he said.
