Monsoon: Rayalaseema Gets Excess Rainfall In First 3 Months

AKP, Vizag get highest rainfall : Reports

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Rayalaseema region, comprising eight districts, received 13 per cent excess rainfall while coastal AP consisting of 18 districts and Yanam of Puducherry recorded slightly lower rainfall than normal in the first three months of the monsoon period.

As per IMD, the state experienced heavy rains in Aug-2025 owing to formation of various weather systems over the Bay of Bengal. It recorded 200.9mm of rainfall, significantly higher than the normal average of 144.4mm during the period between August 1 and 31.

This represents a 39 per cent departure (excess) from normal. This categorizes the rainfall as excess under IMD classification.

AP registered an average of 371.8mm actual rainfall from June 1 to Aug 31 in 2025 while the normal rainfall is 369.5mm. This indicates the state has received normal rainfall during the first three months of the monsoon period.

Six districts -- Anakapalle, Visakhapatnam, Anantapur, Chittoor, Nandyal and Sri Sathya Sai-- recorded excess rainfall while the remaining districts recorded normal rainfall.

Anakapalli received 629mm rainfall during the last three months against the normal of 448mm, meaning a 40 per cent excess, while Visakhapatnam received 523mm against the normal of 405 -- an excess of 29 per cent.

At the end of the monsoon season’s first month (June), the rainfall deficit was 31 in AP; and the rainfall deficit declined to 24 per cent at the end of July.

The heavy rainfall in August wiped out the total deficit in the state.

IMD has forecast a wet September in its latest monthly weather outlook. There is a higher likelihood of delayed withdrawal of the monsoon, which may extend into October.

However, parts of Northeast and East India, many areas in the extreme South Peninsular region and some northernmost areas, are expected to receive below-normal rainfall.
