Visakhapatnam:Jana Sena MLA from Visakhapatnam South, Vamsikrishna Srinivas Yadav, allegedly threw back petition papers on the face of CITU activists who had sought the reopening of the night food court near RTC Complex, according to activists.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, triggering mixed reactions and criticism from sections of the public.
The food vendors have been on an indefinite dharna after their stalls were closed in September last year. Initially, in 2019, permission was given to 32 vendors to operate at the site under a night food street initiative. The food court was shut during the Covid-19 pandemic and briefly reopened in 2021.
Later, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) decided to remove the food court, citing allegations that some individuals had taken control of the space and were running unauthorised activities. Authorities subsequently planned reallocation of stalls to eligible vendors, leading to the removal of the food court in September last year.
Traders, however, have alleged that no alternative arrangements were made after the eviction, leaving them without livelihood support. They have since staged protests, including relay hunger strikes.
CITU leaders, extending support to the agitating vendors, had approached the MLA with a petition when the incident reportedly took place.
