Minister Anitha Not Happy With Functioning Of Fire Officers

Anitha announced the establishment of 22 new fire stations and the addition of 122 fire fighters (engines) to the department’s fleet.

VIJAYAWADA: Home and Disaster Management Minister Vangalapudi Anitha has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the functioning of the Fire Department, in the context of the recent fire mishap in Anakapalle.

On Tuesday, the minister conducted a review meeting on the fire department's performance. In response to persistent complaints, she issued a stern warning to senior officials and asked them to change their approach to serious situations.

Anitha announced the establishment of 22 new fire stations and the addition of 122 fire fighters (engines) to the department’s fleet. She stressed the government's commitment to the welfare of fire personnel, who risk their lives in the line of duty.

Anitha said the fire accidents as in Anakapalle should not be repeated. She noted that out of a total of 45 fireworks units in Anakapalle, only 25 had permits and renewals. Officials failed to perform their duty and massive corruption is said to be one reason.

“Officials must act. They must identify if there are similar unlicensed fireworks units in the state and action should be taken against them. The fire department should issue NOC as per the NBC rules. Fire NOC should be mandatory for all apartments, schools, hospitals and industries,” she said.

Anitha stressed, “NOCs should not be issued on self-declaration anymore. Fire officials should conduct direct inspection and issue NOCs.” They should also regularly monitor apartments, schools, hospitals and industries. Action will be taken if there are structures built in violation of the rules, she said.

The minister said a committee should be formed under the auspices of the fire department in villages and towns with participation of officials from the fire, revenue, police, labour, industries and other departments. They should hold review meetings at least once every three months.
