Minister Advises Pregnant Women To Have Nutritious Food

Poshan Pakhwada drives awareness on maternal and child health across AP

Visakhapatnam: Women and Child Welfare Minister Gummidi Sandhya Rani has emphasised that pregnant women must invariably consume nutritious food during pregnancy to ensure good health of both the mother and child.

Speaking at the “Poshan Pakhwada” programme held at the Parvathipuram Manyam Collectorate on Tuesday, she said a 15-day campaign (April 9– April 23) is being conducted across Andhra Pradesh to create awareness about ensuring good health of pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children.

The minister urged people to make use of government welfare schemes for the purpose. She stressed the importance of maternal health in building a healthy society. She noted that nutritious diets during pregnancy lead to healthier and more intelligent children. She recommended adoption of traditional foods, such as ragi, sesame laddus, and groundnut snacks for better nutrition.

Sandhya Rani encouraged enrolling children below six years at Anganwadi centres, which provide education and proper nutrition. Highlighting concerns, she cautioned against unnecessary caesarean deliveries and promoted natural childbirth.

Speaking on the occasion, District collector Dr. N. Prabhakar Reddy said Anganwadi centres should function as a “second home” for children, offering a joyful and nurturing environment. He appreciated the use of modern teaching methods and activities that enhance learning and creativity among children.

Other officials who spoke stressed on the importance of avoiding junk food, delaying sugar intake for young children, and promoting protein-rich diets, such as eggs and traditional snacks. They suggested regular meetings with parents at Anganwadi centres, apart from monitoring children’s growth and habits.

In his address, MLA Bonela Vijayachandra said early childhood up to six years is crucial, as nearly 90 percent of brain development occurs during this period. He emphasised the need for proper nutrition to improve children’s IQ and overall development.
