Visakhapatnam: Chairman of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Dr Sameer V. Kamat, urged the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) to mentor industries with the active involvement of academia in producing world-class naval products in line with the current global geo-political scenario.

Speaking as the chief guest at NSTL’s 56th Rising Day held in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday, Kamat said NSTL could achieve remarkable outcomes through collective effort with the Indian Navy, supported by its talented and dedicated personnel. He expressed confidence that by 2047, DRDO would become a global technology leader with NSTL spearheading quicker development of systems.

In his address, outstanding scientist and director of the NSTL Dr Abraham Varughese, highlighted notable technological achievements during the year. He said NSTL was striving to achieve Atma Nirbharata in the development of underwater weapons, aligning with the Indian Navy’s requirements and leveraging its world-class test facilities.

On the occasion, Kamat handed over the Transfer of Technology (ToT) for the Balloon Recovery System of Varunastra to director of production at Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) P.V. Raja Ram. He also handed over the NSTL-developed Hybrid GT-IRSS to Rear Admiral Arvind Rawal of the Indian Navy. Rawal remarked that although the world had denied India certain technologies and weapon systems, NSTL had successfully developed them indigenously, and expressed confidence that with NSTL’s continued support, the Navy could achieve complete Atma Nirbharata by 2047.
