Maoist Impersonator Held for Extortion Threat to MLA

Investigators said Kumar, in search of easy money, studied videos on social media about threat letters issued in the name of Maoists. He then drafted a similar letter, claiming to be a Maoist commander, and sent it to the MLA with a demand for Rs.2 crore, threatening to kill her otherwise.

Nellore: Dargamitta police on Friday evening arrested a man who posed as a Maoist and threatened Kovvur MLA Prasanti Reddy, demanding Rs.2 crore and warning of dire consequences if she failed to comply.

The accused was identified as V. Nagamani Kumar, a resident of Alluru East Street in Allur town, who had been staying in Haranathapuram of Nellore, while working at his brother-in-law’s flour mill for the past six months.

Investigators said Kumar, in search of easy money, studied videos on social media about threat letters issued in the name of Maoists. He then drafted a similar letter, claiming to be a Maoist commander, and sent it to the MLA with a demand for Rs.2 crore, threatening to kill her otherwise.

Based on technical surveillance, police tracked him down and nabbed him near the Government Medical College parking lot on Friday evening.

Authorities confirmed that Kumar confessed to the crime. He was remanded later that night. Further investigation was in progress.
