TIRUPATI: Totapuri mango farmers across the erstwhile Chittoor district are set to receive their much-needed financial relief, with the centre formally approving its share of ₹4 per kg in the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), as sought by AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
The centre will contribute ₹1.86 per kg to the state’s decision of providing ₹3.72 per kg as part of the 25 per cent subsidy on the fixed procurement price of ₹14.90 per kg. However, since the state had already committed to a flat ₹4 subsidy, it will now bear the remaining ₹0.28 per kg, so that pricing gaps do not affect farmers.
District administrations of Chittoor, Tirupati and Annamayya have begun the groundwork for disbursing the subsidy, which is expected to be credited to the farmers’ bank accounts within a month. Unlike Karnataka, which imposed restrictions, such as a two-hectare limit per farmer and a cap of 5 tonnes per hectare, Andhra Pradesh has not introduced any such ceilings, allowing both small and large-scale growers to benefit fully. “In Karnataka, the maximum benefit per farmer is about ₹40,000. Here, some of our growers could receive up to ₹2 lakh, depending on the quantity sold,” a senior official of the district Horticulture department disclosed.

So far, factories and collection ramps across Chittoor district have procured around 3.25 lakh tonnes of Totapuri mangoes. Another 15,000–20,000 tonnes are estimated to be still on the trees. Officials expect the total volume eligible for subsidy to reach approximately 3.40 lakh tonnes. At ₹4 per kg, this translates to a subsidy outlay of ₹136 crore, centre’s ₹63.24 crore and ₹72.76 crore of the state.
In the neighbouring Tirupati and Annamayya districts, where another one lakh tonnes have been processed, the centre will contribute ₹18.60 crore and the state ₹21.40 crore under the same scheme. Altogether, farmers across the undivided Chittoor district are expected to receive ₹176 crore in support, with ₹81.84 crore from the centre and ₹94.16 crore from the state government.
Currently, seven factories and nine ramps remain operational, though daily processing has slowed down as the season nears its end. Verification of beneficiaries is underway at Rythu Bharosa Kendras, where lists are being cross-checked against mango sales made at authorised facilities.
“Only those who sold at authorised centres will be eligible. We’re verifying lists and aim to credit the subsidy within a month”, the official stated, noting that final subsidy amounts may see minor adjustments during the verification process.
