Vijayawada: Transport minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy has hinted at revoking plying of sleeper buses based on the need in future. He disclosed that they have sent a communiqué to the central government in this regard.

The minister held a review meeting with officials on prevention of accidents involving buses on Tuesday.

Addressing media later, he said that as part of a special drive to ensure that buses comply with safety norms, the government has set up 16 check posts across the state and is carrying out searches over the past 10 days. Around 10,000 vehicles have been checked. Vehicles belonging to other states have been seized for violation of norms.

Ramprasad Reddy said buses that travel more than 300 km must have two drivers. He announced that they are going to install AI-based cameras in the buses to keep a tab on the behaviour of drivers while driving buses.

The minister announced that they would soon call for tenders to install speed guns at a cost of ₹40 crore to curb high speeds on both the state and national highways.

He called upon the management of private travel buses to take steps to control accidents and warned them of stern action if they failed to do so.

Ramprasad Reddy assured that the government would reduce the tax on seats in buses.
