VISAKHAPATNAM: Srikakulam district police arrested a man carrying over 34 kg of ganja on Tuesday, during an interstate drug trafficking operation between Odisha and Mumbai.
The arrest took place when Ichapuram Town Police apprehended Bidya Sahu, also known as Sona Pahu, on a road behind the second platform of Ichapuram Railway Station. Police seized 34.320 kg of ganja packed in 18 separate packets, along with a motorcycle and a mobile phone.
Circle inspector M. Chinnamanayudu said that the operation was masterminded by Santhun Das, a resident of Khariyaguda village in Odisha, who had been purchasing Ganja directly from local farmers and selling it to Lobokunda, a contact in Mumbai’s Malad area.
The operation turned out to be very profitable for Santhun Das, who also added family members and friends to smuggle the drugs.
Bidya Sahu, a close relative of Santhun Das from the same village in Odisha, got involved in the scheme after he spoke with Das about his financial struggles.
Das, along with his elder brother Koyadas, proposed to Sahu a payment of `10,000 for each trip he made to transport the illegal substances, a proposition Sahu agreed to.
On the day he was apprehended, Sahu had taken a train to Ichapuram Railway Station, carrying two bags filled with packaged ganja. After getting off the train, he picked up his motorcycle and went to a hidden spot behind the second platform of the station, where he was reportedly waiting for Santhun Das and Koyadas when the police caught him.
