Man Arrested For Vandalising Sivalingam at Draksharama Temple

CCTV footage from the surrounding areas was examined, leading to the identification and arrest of the accused

Vijayawada: A man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly destroying a Sivalingam at the ancient Draksharama temple in Dr B.R. Konaseema district.

According to the Draksharama police, the accused, Seelam Srinivas of Thotpeta village, was nursing a grudge against the temple authorities following a dispute over drainage. In the early hours of December 30, he reportedly entered the temple premises through a small gate that had been left open and used a hammer and chisel to damage the Sivalingam before fleeing the spot.

Based on a complaint lodged by the Archaeology Department, police inspected the scene of the offence and deployed a clues team, dog squad and forensic experts. CCTV footage from the surrounding areas was examined, leading to the identification and arrest of the accused.

Meanwhile, temple authorities replaced the damaged Sivalingam with a new one and performed special prayers.
