Major Crimes Dip, Recoveries Improve In Tirupati District In 2025

TIRUPATI: Tirupati district recorded a decline in several major crime categories in 2025, even as overall registered cases rose marginally, with police improving recoveries and securing convictions in serious offences, according to the annual crime report released on Sunday.

Presenting the report at the District Police Office, Superintendent of Police L. Subba Rayudu said 9,253 cases were registered in 2025, a slight increase of 0.71 per cent over the 9,118 cases in 2024.

Bodily offences fell from 1,095 cases in 2024 to 1,029 in 2025, while cybercrime cases dropped from 241 to 186. White-collar crimes also declined marginally from 571 to 563 cases. Property offences, however, rose from 1,052 to 1,109 cases, and cases under other IPC and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita provisions increased sharply from 2,257 to 3,202.

On convictions, the SP said focused court monitoring resulted in convictions in 23 serious cases, including 11 life sentences. These covered 10 POCSO and rape cases, nine murders, one robbery and three other grave offences.

Cyber fraud losses increased from ₹12.31 crore in 2024 to ₹14.45 crore in 2025, but recoveries also improved, rising from ₹2.30 crore to ₹3.53 crore, which was refunded to victims.

Tirupati district topped the state in recovering lost mobile phones through the MobileHunt application, tracing 2,003 phones worth ₹4 crore in 2024 and 2,485 phones worth ₹4.97 crore in 2025.

In property crimes, losses stood at ₹10.27 crore in 2024 and ₹12.22 crore in 2025, with recoveries of ₹5.06 crore and ₹5.66 crore respectively. Detection rates were 50.52 per cent in 2024 and 47.90 per cent in 2025.

As part of anti-narcotics operations, police booked 68 NDPS cases in 2025, seized 762.62 kg of ganja and arrested 179 persons, besides invoking the Preventive Detention Act against 16 habitual offenders. Police also registered 158 illegal liquor cases, arresting 181 persons, and booked two red sanders cases, seizing 488 kg worth ₹11.87 lakh.

Road deaths declined from 541 in 2024 to 513 in 2025, though accidents rose marginally from 1,143 to 1,145. E-challans increased from 1.10 lakh to 1.65 lakh, while fines collected rose from ₹6.63 crore to ₹9.86 crore. Measures such as the ‘No Helmet–No Petrol’ rule, identification of 48 accident black spots and deployment of highway patrol vehicles were implemented.

The SP said 8,469 CCTV cameras installed at 1,659 locations helped detect 187 crimes and solve 58 cases. Of the 4,639 grievances received through the Public Grievance Redressal System, 4,501 were resolved during the year.
