Machilipatnam Port to be Operational with Four Berths by March 2027
Several companies had shown interest in setting up port-linked industries that would generate employment opportunities for youth in Machilipatnam and neighbouring areas, Ravindra said
VIJAYAWADA: The Machilipatnam port is expected to become operational with four berths by March 2027, excise minister Kollu Ravindra said here on Thursday.
Ravindra, who inspected the ongoing port construction works, said the four berths were nearing completion and 95 per cent of the north and south mouth breakwater works had been completed. Preparations would be made for the inauguration between March and June 2027, he said.
The minister attributed the progress to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s efforts and said the port, which had flourished before Independence but subsequently lost its prominence and was closed, had been the subject of several agitations seeking its revival.
Ravindra said the efforts initiated by Naidu during the Telugu Desam government’s 2014-19 tenure were now bearing fruit. He alleged that the project was neglected during 2019-24 and said works gained momentum after the present government came to power in 2024.
The minister alleged that attempts were made to shift the port to Gogileru. He accused former minister and local YSRC leader Perni Nani and former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy of playing a role in the move.
He said the Machilipatnam port would be important for Krishna district and Amaravati. Efforts were under way to leverage its proximity to Hyderabad and connect it with the proposed Future City.
Rail and road connectivities to the port were being developed, while discussions had been held with Central ministers and officials on constructing another road on the northern side.
