Low Pressure Likely to Accelerate Monsoon Onset in AP

Parts of coastal AP experienced light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and gusty winds on Saturday and Sunday.

Visakhapatnam: The low pressure area being formed over West Central Bay of Bengal adjoining north Bay of Bengal is likely to accelerate the southwest monsoons.

IMD on Sunday predicted an increase in thunderstorm activity accompanied by isolated heavy rainfall and gusty winds over parts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Rayalaseema. There could also be thunderstorm activity accompanied gusty winds over north coastal Andhra Pradesh for the next four days.

Parts of coastal AP experienced light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and gusty winds on Saturday and Sunday.

Notably, AP saw a milder summer this May due to prolonged thunderstorm activities, triggered by frequent movement of western disturbances and flow of moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal into the mainland.

The weather agency said a low-pressure area is likely to become more marked in the subsequent two days. Lower tropospheric south westerly winds prevail over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.

Isolated parts of the Palnadu, Bapatla, Prakasam, Nellore, Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai and YSR Kadapa districts in the state may experience heavy rainfall activity between May 26 and May 29 while the remaining districts in the state may witness thunderstorm activity during this period.

As the southwest monsoon set over Kerala on Saturday, eight days ahead of schedule, the rain-bearing weather system is expected to arrive at an early date in AP too. Monsoon normally reaches the state four to eight days after it enters Kerala. However, this year, the strong monsoon current along with the anticipated low-pressure-area is expected to accelerate advancement of the monsoon towards AP.

IMD said the southwest monsoon has further advanced into some more parts of west central and east central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Karnataka, entire Goa, some parts of Maharashtra, some more parts of west central and north Bay of Bengal, and some more parts of Mizoram, some parts of Manipur and Nagaland on Sunday.

The conditions are favourable for further advancement of southwest monsoon into some more parts of AP during the next three days.

On Sunday, Repalle (Bapatla district) received the highest rainfall of 7.2cm, followed by Avanigada (Lrishna) 5.4cm, Ichchapuram (Srikakulam) 5.6cm and Bapatla town 5.8cm. The temperature dropped by four to five degrees all over the state.
