Lokesh Teases Green Cement Ahead of Rs 3,100-Cr Dalmia Expansion in Kadapa

Dalmia Bharat expansion to boost jobs, capacity and low-carbon cement production.

Vijayawada: Education minister Nara Lokesh sparked curiosity on social media Tuesday with a teaser asking, “Cement is usually grey. But can it be ‘green’?”

The post, which quickly went viral, was aimed at highlighting the environmentally sustainable technology behind Dalmia Bharat Cement's major expansion project in Kadapa district.

Lokesh will lay the foundation on Wednesday for Dalmia Bharat Cement's Rs 3,100-crore second-phase expansion project in Kadapa district, a major industrial investment that the state government says will strengthen Rayalaseema's manufacturing base while promoting environmentally sustainable "green cement" technology.

The settings for the company’s second-phase expansion is near Chinnakomerlapalle in Mylavaram mandal of Jammalamadugu constituency. Promoting the initiative under the slogan Rayalaseema Rising, Lokesh indicated that the project would usher in a new era of eco-friendly industrialisation in Andhra Pradesh.

Clarifying the concept, officials said "green cement" does not refer to the colour of the product but to cement manufactured using technologies that significantly reduce carbon emissions and minimise environmental impact.

The Dalmia Bharat expansion involves an investment of Rs 3,100 crore. The company's clinker production capacity would increase from 2.5 million tonnes to 6.1mt per annum, while cement production capacity will rise from 3.6mt to 9.6mt annually.

The expansion is expected to generate 700 additional jobs, taking total direct and indirect employment at the facility from 950 to 1,650. The project is also expected to create further.
