Local Body Polls Only After Summer Break, AP Tells HC

Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas, appearing for the state, submitted that polls would not be held until after the summer break.

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government has informed the High Court that local body elections will not be conducted until the completion of the summer vacation.

A two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Lisa Gill and Justice R. Raghunandan Rao heard a PIL filed by BC Union leader K. Sankara Rao, seeking directions to conduct polls only after completion of the BC population census and finalisation of reservations.

The court also heard a petition by advocate Tandava Yogesh seeking immediate conduct of elections.

Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas, appearing for the state, submitted that polls would not be held until after the summer break.

The court was informed that a state election commissioner has been appointed and that the survey to determine the social status of BCs, undertaken by the Department of Swarna Gram and Swarna Ward, would take about a month.

After considering submissions, the court adjourned the matter to the first week of July.
