Legal Metrology Official Gets Three Years’ RI in Bribery Case

Kurnool: A Kurnool ACB special court on Thursday sentenced a legal metrology department official to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a total fine of `2 lakh in a bribery case registered in 2017.
Special judge N. Srividya pronounced the judgment in CC No. 2/2019, relating to Crime No. 10/RCT-KUR/2017 registered within the Kurnool ACB range.
According to the prosecution, Nangoth Swamy, then district inspector, weights and measures, Kurnool-II, demanded and accepted a bribe of `30,000 from B. Ramalingayya of Allagadda on July 15, 2017. Swamy is currently working as assistant controller in the legal metrology department at Tirupati.
The prosecution said the bribe was demanded at Swamy’s residence in Kurnool in return for favouring renewal of the licence of the Sri Rajyalakshmi weighbridge at Allagadda, which was in the name of the complainant’s wife, and issuing the renewal certificate.
The court convicted Swamy under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and sentenced him to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined him `1 lakh. In default of payment, he would have to undergo an additional six months’ simple imprisonment.
He was also sentenced to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined `1 lakh under Sections 13(2) and 13(1)(d) of the Act. Failure to pay the fine would attract another six months’ simple imprisonment.
The court directed that both sentences be served concurrently. The total fine imposed was Rs 2 lakh.
