Legal Awareness Vital For Institutional Reform: Retired HC Judge

VIJAYAWADA: Retired High Court judge Justice U. Durgaprasad has said that meaningful institutional reforms are possible only when citizens have a clear understanding of laws.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the release of the book Waqf Laws, authored by former IAS officer Md Imtiaz Ahmed, at One Town Musafir Khana in Vijayawada on Friday.
Addressing the gathering, Justice Durgaprasad said the book explains the Waqf Act, its procedures and provisions in simple language that can be easily understood by laypersons. He said the publication not only creates awareness of Waqf laws but also equips readers with essential legal knowledge.
The retired judge noted that the author has traced the evolution of Waqf legislation in independent India, starting with the first Waqf Act of 1954, followed by amendments in 1995, 2013 and the latest changes introduced in 2024, all presented in an accessible manner.
Speaking on the occasion, Imtiaz Ahmed said the book offers comprehensive information on the Waqf Amendment brought by the Union government in 2024, while also detailing earlier laws and amendments. He thanked Deccan Law House for supporting the publication.
Several literary figures and dignitaries, including Golla Narayana, Anil Kumar, Bhaskar Rao, former IAS officer Mohiddin and Gausiya Begum, attended the programme.
