Kurnool: The Kurnool Municipal Corporation launched an initiative to develop underutilised parks across several colonies of the city. As part of the programme, municipal officials recently inspected ELSR Tank Park in C. Camp, Madduri Nagar Park, Birla Compound Park, Venus Colony Park-2 (Khelo India), Prem Nagar Park, Ayushman Hospital premises, Municipal Employees Colony Park and LIC Colony Park, and issued directions for their improvement.
Commissioner P. Viswanath said that six parks will be developed with the support of municipal general funds, corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions and public-private partnership (PPP) models. He added that greenery on new road dividers has already been taken up under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) funds.
Officials, however, flagged a major hurdle, noting that several parks in Kurnool have been encroached upon by local residents, allegedly with the backing of political leaders. Nearly 350 families have been identified as residing on land originally meant for park development in about 15 small and large parks. Authorities clarified that such encroachments are illegal and punishable, urging the residents to seek government-sanctioned housing sites instead.
Viswanath stressed that public parks are being developed to provide citizens with spaces for walking, relaxation and children’s play in a clean and green environment. Plans include enhancing greenery, installing seating and lighting, and ensuring regular maintenance. Special focus is also being laid on parks and stadiums identified under the “Khelo India” programme. With these measures, officials hope to transform Kurnool into a greener, healthier and more attractive city.
