Kurnool: Railway Constable Gets 7-Year Jail Term In 2018 Bribery Case
A Kurnool ACB court sentenced a Yerraguntla railway police head constable to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment for accepting a Rs 9,000 bribe in 2018.
Kurnool: A special Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday sentenced a Government Railway Police head constable to seven years of rigorous imprisonment in a bribery case dating back to 2018.
Special Judge N. Srividya convicted Sreepathi Devadanam(57), a head constable at the Government Railway Police Station in Yerraguntla, YSR Kadapa district, and imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh.
According to the ACB, Bathala Padmavathi of Valasapalli village had approached the Yerraguntla Railway Police Station in January 2018 seeking copies of the FIR, inquest report, post-mortem report and final report related to the death of her elder son, B. Sivasankar, who had died after falling under a train between Yerragudipadu and Yerraguntla.
The ACB said Devadanam, who was investigating the case, demanded a bribe of Rs 9,000 for providing the documents. Unable to pay the bribe, the complainant approached ACB officials. On January 29, 2018, ACB officials caught Devadanam red-handed while allegedly demanding and accepting the Rs 9,000 bribe.
He was subsequently arrested, and after completion of the investigation, a charge sheet was filed before the ACB Court in Kurnool on June 22, 2021. The trial commenced in 2022 and concluded on May 7, 2026. The court delivered its judgment on July 28, convicting Devadanam and sentencing him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 3 lakhs payable as compensation to the complainant.
