TIRUPATI: Kuppam turned into a centre of green mobility on Saturday, with the state government distributing 5,555 electric cycles across the assembly constituency in a single day, setting a Guinness World Record.
Overseen by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, district authorities completed the distribution of e-cycles within 24 hours, the official time window for the record. The programme had been organised under the banner – Green & Healthy Kuppam, projecting the constituency as a model for sustainable transport, renewable energy use, and healthy living.
The beneficiaries included self-help group (SHG) members, village secretariat staff, Anganwadi teachers, ASHA and other working women. To mark the occasion, the Chief Minister himself led a three-kilometre e-cycle rally from Sivapuram to the venue.

Addressing a public meeting at the Praja Vedika in Thumsi village, Naidu announced plans to promote e-cycle usage across other parts of the state. He maintained that the initiative marks an important step in Kuppam’s development, demonstrating how green mobility could be implemented at the local level through public participation and support for local manufacturing.
“Renewable and green energy are being widely discussed. But Kuppam has shown how these ideas can be put into practice,” the CM declared.
He maintained that the government will study how the use of e-cycles affects daily travel and lifestyles. The e-cycles can cover up to 60 km on a single charge and can be charged using household electricity, including rooftop solar systems, at low cost. He said women and students could save ₹1,000–1,500 per month on fuel expenses and contribute to environmental protection.
Chandrababu Naidu referred to the suitability of cycles on narrow roads and lanes, making them useful in both villages and towns. He said Kuppam’s experience shows that net-zero development is both practical and necessary. It is not limited to developed countries.
He made it a point to acknowledge that the electric cycles have been supplied by e-Motorad and assembled at its Kuppam unit.
The initiative of e-cycles is part of Swarna Kuppam Vision 2029 being implemented by the Kuppam Area Development Authority along with IIT Kanpur.
Data shared at the event showed that each e-cycle cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 74.7 per cent, emitting about 15.2 grams of carbon dioxide per km compared with 67.9 grams of a petrol scooter.
To make the scheme affordable, the government is offering subsidies, supplying the e-cycles for ₹23,999 against the market price of ₹34,999.
AP Grameena Bank is providing easy EMI options with a ₹5,000 down payment, Women beneficiaries will be given the cycles without any down payment, it is stated.
