Krishna water usage to be optimised during Kharif season

Vijayawada: Water authorities are optimising the usage of Krishna river water to meet drinking needs and for cultivation of crops raised during the late Kharif season. This is done as the Pulichintala project has only 40.77 tmc-ft of water against the FRL of 45.77 tmc- ft.

There’s no expectation of immediate rainfall and inflow of water from upstream Krishna river; and no water is coming in even from the Nagarjuna Sagar dam. The officials are pinning their hopes on water coming from the Pulichintala project.

The Prakasam barrage across the Krishna river serves over 13 lakh acres of land spread over parts of the erstwhile districts of Krishna, West Godavari, Guntur and Prakasam. Officials are ensuring water supply for crops raised in the late Kharif season at the tail-end areas covering Avanigadda, Konduru, Nagayalanka and others up to parts of Prakasam district to enable the farmers to raise crops for this season.
As for drinking water, the authorities will supply water from February 15 to enable filling up of summer storage tanks in the villages and towns for some time so that such stored water can be utilised during the peak summer period-- April and May -- to avoid any shortage of drinking water to the people in the summer season.
Meanwhile, officials said water will not be supplied for cultivation of crops raised as a second crop during the rabi season from January to April. This is part of the plans to optimise the use of available water.
Krishna river conservator Ravi Kiran said, “We have 40.77 tmc-ft of water in the Pulichintala project, which is the only source of water to Prakasam barrage at present. Hence, we will optimise use of water for cultivation of crops and would store water to meet the drinking water needs during the summer months.”
On the other hand, the state government has given its nod release of `294.20 crore for construction of a flood protection wall along the right margin of Krishna river downstream of Prakasam barrage from 0.900km to 2.610km at Tadepalli village/mandal in Guntur district.
Water resources special chief secretary Sai Prasad issued GO on Wednesday giving the administrative sanction for construction of the flood protection wall. This will help avoid submergence of low-lying areas when Krishna river is flooded.
