Kakinada Collector Proposes Rs. 200 Crore Plan for Sea Erosion

Kakinada:Kakinada district collector S. Shan Mohan has sent proposals to the state government for finding a permanent solution to the sea erosion problem in U. Kothapalli mandal at a cost of Rs.200 crores. It involves construction of a retaining wall as in the state of Kerala.

Shan Mohan told Deccan Chronicle that there is provision for the central government to sanction funds to check coastal erosion. He pointed out that nearly five villages are facing sea erosion in U. Kothapalli mandal.

The collector said detailed project reports have been prepared for completing modernisation of Yeleru reservoir, and renovation and reconstruction of dilapidated and collapsed bridges. Modernisation of Yeleru reservoir will involve an expenditure of ₹800 crores.

He said a new bridge will be constructed connecting Machilipatnam Port to Kakinada Port via Yetimoga at a cost of ₹235 crores. Once the project is completed, traffic snarls in Kakinada city can be reduced.

Referring to the collapsed bridge at Appannapalem between Jaggampet and Prathipadu, Shan Mohan said the bridge will be reconstructed at a cost of ₹13 crore. Another bridge will be built at Surampalem n Gollaprolu mandal involving ₹4 crores.

Asked about the Kakinada Special Economic Zone (KSEZ) issue raised by former finance minister and Telugu Desam politburo member Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, the collector said livelihood issues of fishermen will be considered by holding discussions with managements of companies established in the KSEZ.
