Kakani Seeks Halt to Juvvaladinne Harbour Privatisation, Action in Missing Boats Case

He urged the present government to act against those responsible for the missing boats and withdraw the harbour privatisation proposal

Nellore: Former minister and YSRC district president Kakani Govardhan Reddy on Thursday demanded rollback of the proposed privatisation of the Juvvaladinne Fishing Harbour and sought action in the missing boats case.

Addressing the media at the YSRC district office in Nellore, he alleged that the harbour privatisation move and the disappearance of fishermen’s boats were linked and accused the ruling party leaders of shielding those responsible.

He said some fishermen had admitted their role during community meetings and were fined `2.25 crore by their elders, but alleged that those who instigated them were not facing action. He demanded strict action against all those involved.

Govardhan Reddy alleged that the controversy intensified ahead of former chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s visit to protest against privatisation and claimed attempts were made to suppress fishermen’s grievances.

He said fishermen received higher financial assistance during fishing ban periods and better diesel subsidies under the YSRC government and challenged the present government to an open debate on fishermen’s welfare.

He urged the present government to act against those responsible for the missing boats and withdraw the harbour privatisation proposal.
