Jonnawada Temple: Divine Landmark Steeped in Mythology and Devotion

Radhotsavam at the temple attracts thousands on Sunday

Nellore: Grandeur and devotional fervour marked the Radhotsavam (Chariot Festival) at Jonnawada, the abode of Goddess Kamakshi Devi and Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy on Sunday.

Thousands of devotees took part in the annual festival that attracts devotees from all parts of the two Telugu states and neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

Located along the banks of Pennar River in Nellore district, Jonnawada Temple is a spiritual beacon with a rich history, mythology and enduring faith. It is believed to have been constructed around 1,000 years ago during the reign of the Chola dynasty.

The temple is revered as a Shakti Peetham, a sacred place believed to embody the divine feminine power of Goddess Parvati.

According to legend, after Goddess Sati’s self-immolation, her body got scattered across the Indian subcontinent. One part of Her body fell at Jonnawada, sanctifying the land. The temple is closely associated with Adi Shankaracharya, who is said to have visited this sacred site and consecrated the idol of Sri Kamakshi Devi, giving it spiritual prominence.

In addition, the temple complex also houses a shrine for Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy, representing Lord Shiva. This divine pairing is symbolic of the union of Shakti and Shiva. This makes the temple a significant pilgrimage site for both Shaivites and Shaktas.

What makes Jonnawada particularly special is its mystical connection with the Srichakra, the sacred geometric diagram symbolising the cosmos and the divine feminine energy. This unique aspect attracts spiritual seekers and devotees alike, who believe that worshipping the deity here fulfils wishes and grants spiritual liberation.

In addition to its religious importance, Jonnawada is also known for its community service, with the temple administration providing Annadanam, performing mass marriages and organising various welfare activities for devotees and the underprivileged.
