Jalaharathi Corporation set up for Polavaram-Banakacharla project

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government has established the ‘Jalaharathi’ Corporation to undertake implementation of the Polavaram-Banakacharla link project.

In accordance with the Companies Act, the corporation has been formed as a 100 per cent special purpose vehicle (SPV), based on orders from chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. The corporation would be chaired by the CM Chandrababu Naidu while water resources minister Nimmaka Rama Naidu would be its vice-chairman and the water resources special principal secretary the CEO.
The Polavaram-Banakacharla link project aims to divert flood waters from the Polavaram project. The link project is designed to supply drinking water to approximately 8 million people. The government estimates that 3,00,000 hectares of new irrigation land could be brought under cultivation.
Along with providing water to 914,000 hectares, the project would also offer up to 20tmc of water for industrial use. The estimated cost of the project is `80,112 crore.
