Jagan Urges Governor to Intervene and ‘Save Democracy’

YSR Congress president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Sunday urged governor S Abdul Nazeer to intervene in the alleged obstruction of Opposition candidates from filing nominations for the ULB elections and ensure deployment of central forces and CCTV surveillance throughout the election process.

Vijayawada: YSR Congress president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Sunday urged governor S Abdul Nazeer to intervene in the alleged obstruction of Opposition candidates from filing nominations for the ULB elections and ensure deployment of central forces and CCTV surveillance throughout the election process.

Jagan Reddy met the governor at Lok Bhavan and explained what he described as undemocratic practices by the ruling alliance, like attacks on YSRC candidates, police bias and intimidation at nomination centres.

Earlier, Jagan Reddy met state election commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha and lodged a complaint over the alleged violence and irregularities during the nomination process.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Jagan Reddy said the incidents were unprecedented.

He appealed to party workers to continue their fight, expressing confidence that the situation would change in the coming days.

He alleged that YSRC candidates were being prevented from filing nominations while Telugu Desam supporters were ushered into nomination centres where attacks were carried out against opposition candidates.

The former CM also accused the police of siding with the three-party alliance.

Citing the scale of the alleged irregularities, Jagan Reddy said no nominations had been filed in eight places across the state.

In 19 places, only 36 per cent of the nomination papers had been filed.

Nomination papers of YSRC candidates were torn up in eight other places.

In Pulivendula, only 19 nominations were filed for 36 wards, he said.

Jagan Reddy also apprised the governor of the alleged harsh treatment meted out to YSRC MPs Avinash Reddy, P Mithun Reddy and Gurumoorthy at the nomination centres.

He referred to incidents of police firing at candidates and registration of serious cases against them.

He alleged that active party workers were being targeted through a conspiracy to bind them over.

Appealing to the public to protect democratic rights, Jagan Reddy said everyone wishing to contest the elections must be allowed to file nominations without any obstruction.
