Jagan Attacks Government Over Decline in School Enrolment

He also pointed out that the number of government schools had declined from 45,000 to 44,222, while government-aided schools fell from 991 to 797.

Vijayawada:Former Chief Minister and YSRC president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Saturday alleged that government schools in Andhra Pradesh were facing a “crisis” of declining enrolment, disputing the state government’s claim that more than 1.10 lakh students had shifted from private schools.

Citing UDISE Plus data for 2025-26, Jagan said enrolment in government schools had fallen from 40.50 lakh in 2023-24 to 34.93 lakh, a decline of 5.56 lakh students. During the same period, enrolment in private schools rose from 45.53 lakh to 48.40 lakh, he said.

He also pointed out that the number of government schools had declined from 45,000 to 44,222, while government-aided schools fell from 991 to 797.

Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged that the government was weakening public education while benefiting private educational institutions and said the trend would make quality education inaccessible to poorer students.

He highlighted the YSRC government’s education initiatives between 2019 and 2024, including Mana Badi-Nadu Nedu infrastructure upgrades, free digital tablets, English-medium instruction, bilingual textbooks, 62,000 interactive flat panels, 45,000 smart TVs, TOEFL-based English training and steps towards introducing the International Baccalaureate programme.
