IT Tirupati Hosts BRICS Meet On Geospatial Technology

TIRUPATI: A four-day BRICS working group meeting on geospatial technology is progressing at IIT Tirupati on Monday, with experts discussing the use of satellite-based mapping and spatial data in governance, disaster management, agriculture and urban planning.
The fifth in a series, the meeting brought together delegates from, besides India, nations like Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. The programme is being organised by IIT Tirupati in association with the geospatial living lab of the IIT Madras technology innovation hub.
Geospatial technology integrates satellite imagery, geographic information systems, remote sensing and location-based information to map, monitor and analyse the earth's surface. Experts said the technology supports land record management, infrastructure planning, water resource management, forest and crop monitoring, disaster response and public service delivery through accurate spatial information.
The technical sessions are focusing on geospatial infrastructure for sustainable development, climate resilience, positioning, navigation and timing technologies, artificial intelligence-based geospatial analytics and data interoperability. These technologies improve the accuracy of mapping and navigation systems while enabling faster analysis of large volumes of satellite and spatial data.
The meeting is also examining common standards for geospatial data to facilitate seamless sharing and use of information among organisations and participating countries. Delegates said such cooperation is essential for addressing climate change, disaster risk reduction, environmental monitoring and natural resource management.
Participants are presenting case studies on the application of geospatial technology in infrastructure planning, transport management, agriculture, environmental conservation and governance. Discussions are also covering the integration of emerging technologies with geospatial systems to improve planning and decision-making.
A special session titled ‘Translating Innovation into Impact’ is focusing on the role of technology innovation hubs in converting research into practical solutions for government departments, industry and society. Experts are also discussing innovation, entrepreneurship, technology transfer and collaboration between academia and industry.
The concluding plenary session will explore opportunities for collaborative research, student and faculty exchange programmes, and capacity-building initiatives among the participating countries. The meeting will conclude on July 23 with a cultural programme showcasing the heritage of Andhra Pradesh.
