ISRO, IIG Conduct Space Science Outreach Programme in Port Blair

Over 200 students and faculty attend two-day programme on space science and technology

Nellore: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) jointly conducted a two-day space science outreach programme held in Srivijayapuram (Port Blair) on October 6 and 7, with more than 200 participants, including 180 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 20 faculty members.

Former ISRO chairman and former secretary, department of Space, A.S. Kiran Kumar inaugurated the programme. ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) director M.R. Raghavendra, IIG director Prof. A.P. Dimri and Isro science programme office director Dr Tirtha Pratim Das were among those present.

Kiran Kumar stressed the importance of maintaining India’s leadership in space, while Raghavendra highlighted the significance of scientific observations from space- and ground-based systems. Prof. Dimri explained the interaction between the Earth’s magnetic field and the solar magnetic field and its role in space weather.

The programme featured lectures on space science, solar physics, geomagnetism, space weather, comparative planetology, exoplanets and astrobiology, besides interactive sessions and a space exhibition.

The outreach was organised under the ISRO-IIG MoU signed in September 2024, aimed at taking space science awareness to different parts of the country and encouraging students to pursue careers in space science and technology.
