IRCS to Set up Jana Aushadhi Stores At All Government Hospitals

Andhra Pradesh government has approved the establishment of Jana Aushadhi stores in all 26 government hospitals, aiming to curb profiteering by private generic medical shops and ensure affordable medicines.

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh government has given permission to the AP Branch of Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) to set up Jana Aushadhi stores in all 26 government hospitals in the state under the centre’s Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana.
Special chief secretary (Health) M.T. Krishna Babu issued GO No. 327 in this regard on Friday.
Earlier, the Medical Education director had submitted a report stating that the existing generic medical shops operating in the teaching hospitals of Andhra Pradesh are making huge profits while selling medicines. This is because there is no effective mechanism to regulate the whimsical these shops collect from the patients.
The state government also observed that the generic medical shopkeepers at teaching hospitals had been selling medicines at different rates to different customers by offering varied discounts.
Such overcharging took place because private individuals with profit motive had been operating a majority of these shops.

Given this backdrop, AP government decided to grant permission to the Indian Red Cross Society to establish Jana Aushadhi stores in all government general hospitals in the state.
The respective Hospital Development Societies will fix the lease rates in consultation with the Roads and Buildings department for IRCS to run the Jana Aushadhi stores.
