INS Nistar to Be Commissioned in Vizag Today
Weighing over 10,500 tons (GRT), INS Nistar is approximately 120 metres long and over 20 metres wide.

Visakhapatnam: The Indian Navy is preparing to commission its inaugural diving support vessel, INS Nistar, during a ceremony in Visakhapatnam on Friday. The event will be led by Union minister of state for defence Sanjay Seth, with Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the Chief of Naval Staff and other higher-ups present.
This ceremony marks a shift in plans, as Union defence minister Rajnath Singh was initially scheduled to launch the vessel before the changes were made.
INS Nistar symbolises India's advancing capabilities in local defense production. Entirely designed and constructed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam, the vessel consists of more than 80% domestic content and saw collaboration from 120 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) nationwide.
Weighing over 10,500 tons (GRT), INS Nistar is approximately 120 metres long and over 20 metres wide. The vessel is specifically engineered for specialised underwater missions, with its main functions encompassing deep-sea diving operations and rescue efforts for distressed submarines.
The ship contains an advanced diving complex that spans multiple levels, outfitted with cutting-edge systems tailored for saturation diving missions. This specialized facility allows the vessel to conduct extended underwater operations at considerable depths.
INS Nistar's underwater capabilities are further enhanced by a selection of advanced technology. The vessel is fitted with Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) that can be utilised for diverse intervention tasks below the surface.
In its vital function as a mothership for Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle operations, INS Nistar is capable of deploying ROVs for initial interventions and assessments, followed by the launch of a Submarine Rescue Vehicle that can evacuate personnel from submarines in danger.
