ILA Seeks Civil Courts for Chit Fund Disputes

VIJAYAWADA: The Indian Lawyers Association (ILA) has urged the Andhra Pradesh government to transfer adjudication of chit fund disputes from registrars and arbitrators to regular civil courts and increase the state’s matching grant for families of deceased advocates from `4 lakh to `10 lakh.
An ILA delegation led by state president and Andhra Pradesh Bar Council member G. Santha Kumar met Law and Minority Welfare Minister Nasyam Mohammed Farooq at his camp office in Tadepalli on Friday and submitted two representations seeking legal reforms and welfare measures for advocates.
The delegation sought amendments to the Chit Funds Act, 1982, arguing that administrative authorities lacked adequate judicial training and were burdened with heavy workloads, resulting in delays and hardship for litigants.
It also sought an increase in the matching grant under the Advocates Welfare Fund to provide greater financial support to bereaved families. Farooq responded positively and assured the delegation that the demands would be examined on priority and steps taken for early implementation.
The ILA also raised its earlier demands for a stipend for junior advocates, an Advocates Protection Act, health insurance for lawyers and house sites for eligible advocates. Farooq assured the delegation that these issues would also be considered on priority.
Advocates Mogal Kalesha Baig, Maila John Jabbaj, Maila John Peter, S.K. Mastan Vali, Mande Suresh Babu, S.K. Subhani, Ajay, Didla Sagar, Lakshman, Gnanadeep and Kranthi Simha were among those present.
