Nalgonda: Miss World contestants were captivated by the traditional Ikkat tie-and-dye woven designs during their visit to Pochampally in Yadadri-Bhongir district on Thursday. A group of 25 contestants from African countries arrived at Pochampally, where local women warmly welcomed them by applying ‘sinduram’ on their foreheads.
At the Pochampally Ikkat Textile Tourism Park, the contestants closely observed the intricate weaving of Ikkat sarees on maggams and got detailed explanations about the unique weaving techniques from officials of the textiles department.
The designs displayed at the textile park stalls drew their special attention, prompting them to spend considerable time admiring the craftsmanship. The visitors also witnessed a fashion show held in the park’s auditorium, where local models showcased garments made from Pochampally Ikkat fabrics, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Meanwhile, another group of nine Miss World contestants from Caribbean countries visited the Sri Lakshminarsimha Swamy temple at Yadagirigutta. They offered ‘oil’ (tailam) to the akhanda deepam (eternal lamp) on the hill shrine and explored the temple’s inner and outer prakaram sculptures. Temple authorities briefed them on the religious significance and sanctity of the shrine.
In a colourful display of local tradition, the Caribbean contestants, dressed in sarees and half sarees, joined the temple’s women devotees in performing the traditional kolatam dance, celebrating the vibrant culture of the region.
