IAB Decides to Release Water for 3,763 Acres From July 15

District officials plan to tank fill and ensure the urea supply to support farmers this season

Kurnool: The Kurnool district administration has decided to release water from the K.C. Canal for Kurnool district ayacut for the kharif season, covering 3,763 acres starting July 15, district collector P. Ranjit Basha said on Monday.

Speaking at the Irrigation Advisory Board (IAB) meeting held at the collectorate, Basha said an indent for water under the Tungabhadra Lower-Level Canal would be submitted by July 10, paving the way for the release from July 18.

The collector informed that the IAB passed a resolution, urging the government to take up construction of the Gundrevula and Vedavathi projects. Additionally, it resolved to request the government to set up two sluices on the Handri-Neeva canal near Nayakallu village in Kallur mandal and Laddagiri village in Kodumur mandal to improve water access for farmers.

He said expansion works on the Handri-Neeva canal, which would increase its carrying capacity to 3,850 cusecs, are progressing and would be completed soon to enable water release from July 15. As part of the plan to fill 68 tanks in the erstwhile Kurnool district, the collector said 33 tanks would be fully filled with Handri-Neeva water. Last year, filling all tanks significantly eased the drinking water situation, he noted. He instructed irrigation officials to ensure tanks are replenished continuously until March 31.

On the issue of urea supply, the collector clarified that there would be no shortage anywhere in the district and observed that some traders might create an artificial scarcity. He directed the Adoni sub-collector and Kurnool and Pathikonda RDOs to review the matter with agriculture officials and submit a report.

Zilla Parishad chairman Yerrabothula Papireddy sought clarity from officials on the completion of the Handri-Neeva expansion and the timeline for filling all 77 identified tanks.

The superintending engineer of Handri-Neeva assured that the works would be completed soon and filling of the tanks would take about four months.

MLC B.T. Naidu, Panyam MLA Gowru Charitha, Adoni MLA Dr P.V. Parthasarathi, Kodumur MLA Boggula Dastagiri and senior officials attended the meeting.
