HYDRAA Clears Park, Reopens Public Roads
The need to widen existing drains to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater and prevent accumulation on roads - A.V. Ranganath

HYDERABAD: Acting on complaints received through Prajavani, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) took action in two major encroachment cases, while commissioner A.V. Ranganath conducted field inspections across several flood-prone areas in the city.
In Maitreyinagar, Chandanagar, HYDRAA cleared encroachments on one-acre park land that had been illegally sold as individual plots. The land, intended for public use, had turned into a bushy, unsafe zone. HYDRAA officials cleared the overgrowth, removed unused sheds and restored access to make the park usable again.
In another case, illegal compound walls blocking public roads in Jayapuri Colony near Ghatkesar were demolished. Officials found that encroachers had attempted to claim approved layout land as agricultural land using forged documents.
Following recent heavy rains and waterlogging, the commissioner visited Ramachandrapuram, one of the worst-affected areas. He inspected locations where rainwater stagnates, reviewed the clearing of silted drains and assessed the progress of new stormwater channels intended to serve as bypass routes during future downpours.
The commissioner emphasised the need to widen existing drains to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater and prevent accumulation on roads. He held discussions with officials from the GHMC and National Highways Authority to identify the causes of flooding and possible interventions.
Later, Ranganath visited the railway underbridge near Surabhi Colony, located between Chandanagar and Lingampally stations—another low-lying area vulnerable to flooding. GHMC officials pointed out that overflow from Gopi Cheruvu, Chakali Cheruvu and other upstream lakes contributes to the recurring inundation.
Officials noted that newly expanded box drains may help reduce flooding this monsoon. The commissioner instructed departments to ensure regular maintenance and keep drains free of garbage to prevent clogging.
