Huge haul of red sanders logs worth ₹4.20cr, 8 held

In a major crackdown, members of the Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force (RSASTF) arrested eight interstate smugglers and seized 195 red sanders logs weighing approximately six tonnes.

Tirupati: In a major crackdown, members of the Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force (RSASTF) arrested eight interstate smugglers and seized 195 red sanders logs weighing approximately six tonnes. The estimated cost of the seized goods was valued at ₹4.20 crore. A car and a motorcycle used in illegal activities by the criminals were also confiscated.

Acting on a tip-off, the task force team members raided near Komitoni Cheruvu in Veeraballi Mandal of Annamayya district, where the accused were loading red sanders logs on a vehicle. When the raiding team led by SP P. Srinivas and head of the task force, L. Subba Rayudu, arrived at the spot, smugglers attempted to flee. But eight were apprehended.
The arrested smugglers belonged to Tiruvannamalai district in Tamil Nadu. Based on information provided by the arrested persons, the police expanded the area of operation up to Karnataka. Thereafter, a joint operation was carried out by the task force along with Tirupati district police. A hidden location in Nilgiris plantation near Kattigenahalli village under Hoskote taluk was raided and from where additional 185 logs were recovered.
The task force head Subba Rayudu appreciated the accomplishment of the personnel and also announced rewards for their achievement. The seized contraband, along with a car and a motorcycle, was transported to Tirupati for further investigation. The task force has intensified efforts to track down the main culprits involved in the smuggling racket. “Probe is on to identify and arrest other key players in the smuggling network,” the task force head, said.
