Vijayawada:The AP government has sounded a high alert in the state following warnings of heavy rainfall across Andhra Pradesh for the next two days.
Home minister Vangalapudi Anitha, who also handles the department of disaster management, responded swiftly to the warning issued by the weather office on Tuesday. Precautionary steps must be taken to ensure public safety, she advised officials at a review meeting held at the Secretariat with disaster management MD, Ronanki Kurmanath and others.
She stressed the need for coordination among various departments to prevent loss of life. “Let us proactively alert residents and farmers about the risks of thunderstorms and flooding,” she said.
Anitha said there was significant rainfall in areas including Eluru, Repalle and Ponnur, prompting officials to implement necessary steps to protect vulnerable populations, particularly those living in low-lying regions prone to flooding.
She said that in the Kurnool district, the water levels in Tungabhadra and Vedavati rivers were rising. Those living along their course must be ready for evacuations and safety protocols.
IMD, she said, has said extensive rains are likely across North Andhra, including districts such as Tirupati, Chittoor, Nellore, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, Sri Sathya Sai, Anantapur, Kurnool and Nandyal. Officials from the revenue, municipal, irrigation, disaster management, electricity, roads and buildings should maintain continuous vigilance.
The predictions of showers also covered Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Bapatla districts. Anitha advised the disaster management department to keep the public informed about thunderstorms, lightning, floods and strong winds through mobile alerts and IVRS phone calls.
