High-level committee investigates Korba train fire accident
Visakhapatnam: A high-level inquiry committee has been appointed by the East Coast Railway (ECoR) to investigate Sunday’s fire in an empty air-conditioned coach here.
The committee, comprising chief electrical engineer Surath Jani, chief rolling stock engineer SC Behera and chief security commissioner BS Nath arrived at the site on Sunday night for an on-the-spot study.
The fire broke out while the Korba-Visakhapatnam Express was stationary at platform 4, shortly after all passengers had exited.
The high-level team held inspections at the station yard as also the maintenance depot on Monday and collected information from railway officials and staff into the circumstances leading to the fire. Technical experts from the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, where the coach was manufactured, and the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in Lucknow are also engaged in the probe. The state forensic team began its investigation soon after the fire.
The initial assessment was that a short circuit in the toilet area of the affected B7 coach led to the fire. The B7 coach was completely destroyed and the adjacent B6 and M1 coaches suffered partial damage.
