Heavy Rains: Roads Flooded in Several Districts, Flights Diverted

Rajahmundry/Amaravati: Heavy rains triggered by a deep depression that made its landfall in Kalingapatnam are lashing several parts of Andhra Pradesh, disrupting road, rail and air travel across the state. Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, NTR and Polavaram districts are among those receiving intense rainfall. Tanks, streams and canals are overflowing, and rivers are swelling with heavy floodwaters.

Flight operations at Rajahmundry airport were badly affected. On Thursday, a Hyderabad-to-Rajahmundry flight ran late, and the FLY91 service scheduled for 1:00 PM was delayed by an hour.

Another flight of the same airline reached Rajahmundry on Wednesday night, but poor weather prevented a landing. It circled in the air for about three hours before the pilot diverted it to Bengaluru, leaving passengers and their waiting families anxious.

Elsewhere in the state, an IndiGo flight from Visakhapatnam to Vijayawada was diverted to Shamshabad in Hyderabad. A Star Air flight from Hyderabad to Rajahmundry was diverted to Bengaluru. Several flights were cancelled because of the weather, and airport officials have advised passengers to check flight status before leaving for the airport.

Heavy rain has flooded low-lying areas across East Godavari and brought down trees on roads. A large tree fell on the Erra Kaluva bridge on the Anaparthi-Polamuru road, badly disrupting traffic.

With the Erra Kaluva in spate, floodwater has spilled onto several roads around Nidadavole. Water on the Singavaram-Tallapalem road has halted vehicle movement. In Rajahmundry, the roads around the Hi-Tech Bus Stand Centre and the railway station are also submerged. Buses, trains and flights have been delayed, causing considerable hardship for commuters.

Vijayawada city in NTR district has been witnessing continuous rainfall since Wednesday morning, leaving several low-lying areas inundated. Several schools in the city declared a holiday for the second day today.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that the intensity of rainfall will increase as the depression is likely to enter Odisha near Koraput this afternoon or evening. It said downpour would continue for the next two days. It is very likely to move northwestwards initially, maintaining the intensity for the next 12 hours, thereafter, it is very likely to move north-northwestwards and weaken gradually during the subsequent 24 hours," the Met Department said.
