Heavy Rains Claim Two Lives, Three Go Missing in AP

Crops in hundreds of acres of land under inundation, livestock perishes

Vijayawada: Heavy rains caused the death of two men while three persons were reported missing in the swirling waters of River Krishna on Wednesday.

Crops in hundreds of acres of land have been inundated and livestock perished mainly in parts of NTR, Krishna, Palnadu, Bapatla, erstwhile Godavari districts and Rayalaseema.

In Vijayawada, the heavy rains inundated several low-lying areas. A person identified as Madhusudhan fell into a manhole and died. In another incident, a man was fatally hit by a tree that fell to the ground due to rainfall.

Vijayawada municipal commissioner H.M. Dhyanachandra reported two deaths - one due to health reasons and the other in an accident not related to the rainfall.

In Guntur district of Thullur mandal, two persons were washed away in the swirling waters of Krishna river. They were trying to pull a boat. The two were Kameswara Rao and Upendra. However, one person managed to reach back to the shore.

At Nidamarru, a boy was washed away in the floodwater while in Tadikonda, nearly 16 sheep perished.

In Guntur district alone, 25,000 hectares of agriculture crops was inundated. There were reports of commuters facing hardships as the overflowing streams and rivers flooded the roads and national highway at several places. These disrupted vehicle traffic for long durations in roads connecting mainly Vijayawada-Hyderabad and Vijaywada-Guntur and Vijayawada towards Eluru and Visakhapatnam.

The AP state disaster management authority has deployed personnel from NDRF, SDRF, police and fire force to take up rescue operations.

As per data available with the state government, Mummidivaram mandal in the BR Ambedkar Konaseema district received the highest rainfall of 188.5mm followed by Nidamarru- 188.5mm, Mummidivaram-185.5mm, Nandigama-167.5mm, and Chandapuram of Nandigama-158.75mm.

IMD said parts of districts like Palnadu, Guntur, Bapatla and Prakasam witnessed extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places while parts of districts like Nellore, Nandyal, Krishna, Eluru and West Godavari received heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. Districts including Tirupati, Annamayya, Kadapa, Anantapur, Kakinada, Konaseema, ASR, Anakapalli and East Godavari received heavy rainfall at isolated places.
