Heavy Rain Disrupts Life in Vijayawada; Control Room Activated

Heavy rain and winds disrupt city life; NDRF, civic teams clear debris swiftly

Vijayawada: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds disrupted normal life in Vijayawada on Sunday, uprooting trees, toppling hoardings and triggering panic across several areas. What began as a pleasant weather shift quickly escalated into chaos as the city was hit by a sudden thunderstorm.

The storm coincided with the NEET examination, raising concerns about students’ access to centres. However, swift action by NTR district collector Dr G. Lakshmisha ensured smooth movement of candidates. The Collector, along with NDRF teams and municipal staff, conducted ground inspections in affected areas such as Poly Clinic Road, Nirmala Convent Junction and Hanumanpet. Fallen trees and hoardings were cleared, and waterlogged streets were drained using motor pumps to facilitate traffic flow.

The district recorded an average rainfall of 14.87 mm in just 30 minutes, according to officials. The Meteorological Department has forecast further thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next two days.

Dr Lakshmisha urged the public to remain indoors during storms, avoid parking under trees and ensure safety, particularly for children and the elderly. A 24/7 control room has been set up at the Collectorate, and residents can contact 9154970454 for emergency assistance.

The Collector assured that the administration remains fully alert and is taking all necessary measures to respond to weather-related disruptions.
