Heatwave Kills 20 Lakh Poultry Birds In Godavari Districts

Poultry federation said the industry has suffered a loss of ₹50 crore during the past one week.

KAKINADA: Rising temperatures in erstwhile East and West Godavari districts have badly hit the poultry sector over the past 10 days. According to those in the poultry trade, nearly 20 lakh birds, including broilers and layers, have died in the Godavari districts unable to withstand the heat.

Traders are highly disappointed, saying they have been facing continuous losses over the past seven months, early to diseases and now to heat waves.
Andhra Pradesh Poultry Federation general secretary Padala Subba Reddy said in the past, poultry birds could be insured when taken on loans from banks. However, after the bird flu disease, there is no insurance. Insurance is not available though the federation has submitted representations to the union government several times.
Subba Reddy said the poultry industry has suffered a loss of ₹50 crore during the past one week. He said even the eggs are weak, as birds are unable to feed due to heat wave conditions.
In the interim, people of Godavari districts are experiencing unbearable heat waves. There are no winds and humidity is high, making the people suffer. Vendors of sugarcane juice, lemon juice, coconut water and palm fruit are doing good business. But they are closing their business by 1 p.m., as no customers are on the roads or streets thereafter.
On Sunday evening, however, heavy winds and gales prevailed in the Godavari districts.
