Habitual Bike Stealer Held in Kurnool

Following a complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation.

Kurnool 3-Town police on Monday arrested a man accused of stealing two-wheelers from public places in the town.

The case came to light after a vehicle was reported stolen from the premises of Kurnool Government Hospital ten days ago. Following a complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation. The accused, identified as Pothula Jacob of Kakkalapalli in Anantapur district, was tracked down and detained.

During interrogation, police found he had allegedly been involved in theft of nearly 42 two-wheelers. DSP J. Babu Prasad said Jacob targeted vehicles belonging to people who were occupied inside the hospital. Police said efforts are underway to recover the stolen vehicles.

Milton’s birth anniv. observed

Kurnool:The English department of Silver Jubilee College on Tuesday observed the 417th birth anniversary of renowned English poet John Milton, born on December 9, 1608.

Cluster University Registrar Dr G. Srinivas said Milton remains one of the greatest figures in English literature, adding that regular reading of his works can significantly improve language skills and confidence among students. He noted that while many feel English is difficult, exposure to classics can transform fluency.

Vice-principal Dr B.R. Prasad Reddy said corporate employers increasingly prefer candidates with strong communication skills and reward fluency in English with better opportunities and salaries. Dean Dr. Akhtar Bhanu termed Milton’s contributions “priceless,” stating that the poet’s influence continues to shape modern literary study.

Cluster University OSD Dr S.M. Basha explained Milton’s epic Paradise Lost in simplified form to help students understand its themes and enduring relevance. Faculty members emphasised the value of continuous reading and spoken practice during the event.

AP transfers 13 DEOs/DSEOs

Vijayawada:Andhra Pradesh government has transferred 13 district educational officers/district school educational officers and issued postings for some of them for full additional charge in the state.

School education secretary Kona Sasidhar issued GO RT No. 318 here on Tuesday.

OUDA sets Jan. 23 deadline for LRS, BPS

Nellore:The Ongole Urban Development Authority (OUDA) has launched an awareness programme urging property owners to submit applications for regularising unauthorised buildings and layouts on or before January 23, 2026.

The session, held at the collector’s grievance hall in Ongole under the chairmanship of Prakasam district joint collector Ronanki Gopalakrishna, brought together district panchayat officials, deputy MPDOs, municipal staff within OUDA limits, and licensed engineers.

During the meeting, OUDA officials explained that applications must be filed through the https://dtcp.ap.gov.in/BPS portal. They warned that properties not regularised within the stipulated period will be denied future building permissions and that their sale or purchase will be restricted at all sub-registrar offices, with the possibility of further legal action. Officials stressed that regularisation will enable property owners to access essential services such as electricity and drainage, and ensure smooth legal transactions in the future. For additional details, residents can contact the OUDA office or their respective gram panchayat offices. Planning officer Babu Rao, secretary Devasena, and OUDA staff also participated in the programme.

GMC students excel at national pharma meet

Vijayawada:The Guntur Medical College (GMC) students and residents made the institution proud by securing top honours at the National Pharmacology Conference held in GMC on Tuesday. Principal Dr N.V. Sundarachari personally congratulated all the award winners and expressed pride in their accomplishments.

Dr Manikandan, a postgraduate in pharmacology, delivered an oral presentation on his research focusing on the rational use of medications in cancer patients. His findings highlighted that cancer drug usage aligns with national treatment guidelines and that supportive care is effectively being provided to manage adverse drug effects. His scientific presentation earned him the first prize in the PG research presentation category at the national level.

In another proud achievement, senior resident Dr. Jahir from the department of Pharmacology was conferred the prestigious Young Scientist Award in recognition of his innovative research contributions. Adding further laurels to GMC, MBBS undergraduate Dedeepya also won a national-level award for her participation in the student research category, standing out among peers from across the country.

Dr Sundarachari emphasised the importance of such research initiatives and encouraged more students and departments to engage in scientific exploration actively. He also congratulated Dr Solomon Raju, head of the pharmacology department, for his role in advancing the department's academic excellence.

SMC PG students sweep awards at AP Dermatology Conference

Vijayawada:Postgraduate students of the Siddhartha Medical College (SMC) Department of Dermatology have won top honours at the 44th State-Level Dermatology Conference (Cuticon) organised in Tirupati on December 6 and December 7.

Under SMC Dermatology department head Dr. T. Vani’s guidance, three PG students participated in the prestigious conference. They returned with multiple accolades in different categories.

Dr Ashwini secured first prize in the Paper category for her research presentation. Dr G. Vardini Rithika earned first prize in the Poster segment with a rare case report, while Dr P. Neha demonstrated her expertise by winning a prize in the quiz competition.

The college celebrated its students’ achievements, with SMC principal Dr A.Y. Rao and hospital superintendent Dr A.V. Rao felicitating the students for their achievement.

At the Cuticon, Dermatology head Dr. Vani delivered a keynote address on "Skin Side Effects of Chemotherapy in Cancer Treatment – Their Prevention and Treatment," which participants in the conference appreciated.

Authorities congratulated Dr Vani for the latest achievement by the department’s students.

Three killed, 3 injured in collision near Nagari

Tirupati:Three persons lost their lives and three more were injured in a fatal road accident near VKR Puram at Tadukupeta in Nagari mandal of Chittoor district on Tuesday.

Nagari DSP Syed Mohammed Aziz said two cars, travelling at high speed in opposite directions, crashed head-on. Police shifted the injured to a government hospital for treatment.

The victims were Santhanam, 40, Shankar, 45, both working as Potu staff at the Tiruchanoor temple, and Arun Kumar, 40, from Meenambakkam in Chennai. Kumar was on his way to Tirumala along with his family for darshan. His family members, Madhu, Selvi and Yeshwanth, suffered injuries.

Cops launch manhunt for minor’s assault

Tirupati:The Alipiri police in Tirupati have launched a manhunt for an autorickshaw driver accused of sexually assaulting a minor college student, to book him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The incident, which occurred on December 3, came to light on Tuesday, after the victim lodged a complaint with the police.

According to the police, the 17-year-old victim, studying polytechnic and residing at a private hostel, had booked the accused’s auto through a ride-hailing app. The driver, identified as Sai Kumar, later contacted her, pretending to offer financial help.

Gaining her trust over phone calls, he lured her to a room on the pretext of providing assistance and allegedly assaulted her. He then threatened to kill her if she revealed the crime. Fearing for her life, the girl remained silent initially. She later confided in a friend and filed a formal complaint at the Alipiri police station.

Based on her complaint, the police have registered a case (Crime No. 448/2025) under the Pocso Act, 2012, and relevant sections of the BNS. “The accused is absconding. We have formed special teams to trace him. We are questioning his family and acquaintances as part of the investigation and will arrest him soon,” said a senior police official.

Vizianagaram cybercrime team recovers 163 stolen mobiles worth `26.78 lakh

Visakhapatnam:The cybercrime team of Vizianagaram district police has successfully recovered 163 stolen and lost mobile phones valued at approximately `26.78 lakh.

Superintendent of police A.R. Damodar, at a press meet held on Tuesday, said that the recovered devices include a wide range of popular smartphone brands.

He said this recent recovery is part of the district's ongoing efforts to combat mobile phone theft. Since the formation of the district’s Social Media Cyber Cell in Vizianagaram, the team has recovered more than 3,463 mobile phones, valued at a total of `6.26 crore.

The SP emphasised the importance of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal and instructed citizens to file complaints immediately through CEIR when their mobile phones go missing.

To make the process more convenient for the public, the SP issued instructions allowing people to lodge reports at nearby local police stations for stolen or lost mobile phones.

These reports will be updated to the Cyber Cell through a Google Sheets system, which will then be worked on, and the devices will be recovered by the cybercrime team, he said.

3 held for stealing power lines, copper wire

Nellore:Prakasam district police arrested a gang involved in stealing high-tension power cables and copper wires from transformers across multiple mandals. The arrests were made on December 8 near Narayanapalli crossroads in Komarole mandal.

The case was registered based on a complaint by Gaddala Shivakoti of Marepalli village. The thefts occurred over the past three months in Balireddypalli, Chintalapalli, Madhavapalli, and Hasanapuram. Police recovered 15,100 metres of 11KV aluminium power cables and 45 kg of copper wire, worth about `3.85 lakh, along with an auto trolley used in the crime. The accused are also linked to six similar cases registered at the Komarole, Giddalur, Racherla, Cumbum, and Peddaraveedu police stations. The arrested men, Nisinam Irmiya, 29, Chigurla Anjaneyulu, 30, and Mahanandigari Srinivasulu, 27, are residents of the same village in Nandyal district. Police said the accused had been involved in several theft cases and had previously served jail sentences. In recent months, they allegedly stole wires from about 202 electricity poles and broke open transformers to extract copper.

Acting on instructions from SP V. Harshavardhan Raju, DSP Nagaraju supervised the investigation. The gang was caught while attempting to transport the stolen material to Markapuram for sale. The SP congratulated the officers and staff for their swift action and successful arrests.

20-year jail in Kovur Pocso case

Nellore:The Nellore Pocso Court has sentenced an accused to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of `25,000 in a Pocso case registered in the Kovur area.

The verdict follows a case booked on April 21, 2021, in which the accused attempted to sexually assault a minor girl. The case (Cr. No. 98/2021) was registered at the Women Police Station under relevant sections of the IPC and the Pocso Act.

After a thorough investigation and strong presentation of evidence, the prosecution proved the charges in the court.

The court, presided over by Judge Siripireddy Suma delivered the sentence on Tuesday. The convicted person was identified as Rayadurgam Venkateswarlu, 66, of Paturu village, Kovur mandal.

Nellore SP Dr Ajita Vezendla reiterated that strict action will be taken against those involved in crimes against women and children. She appreciated the efforts of the investigation team, prosecution, and court monitoring staff for ensuring justice in the case.
