GVMC Seals 58 Shops, Imposes ₹4.36 Lakh In Fines

Officials inspected 80 establishments: Reports

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) sealed 58 shops and imposed fines totalling ₹4.36 lakh during a citywide drive against sanitation violations on Thursday.

The action followed special inspections across all 10 municipal zones after GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg directed officials to intensify enforcement against commercial establishments violating sanitation norms.

Officials inspected 80 establishments. Officials sealed 58 shops, while they fined the remaining 22. Violations included dumping waste in public places, littering on roads and in drains, using prohibited plastic materials, and breaching other sanitation regulations.

Madhurawada recorded the most closures, with officials sealing 16 shops and imposing fines totalling Rs 94,000. In the East zone, officials sealed 14 shops and fined them ₹43,000, while eight establishments in the North zone attracted penalties of ₹55,500.

Authorities sealed two shops each in Bheemili and the South Zone, with fines of ₹40,000 and ₹58,500, respectively. Authorities sealed five shops in the West zone and fined them ₹37,500.

Authorities sealed three establishments in the Pendurthi and Gajuwaka zones and imposed penalties of ₹39,500 and ₹30,500, respectively. The civic body sealed one shop in Aganampudi and fined it ₹15,000, while it sealed four shops in Anakapalli and fined them ₹22,500.

Ketan Garg said the civic body gave top priority to cleanliness and public hygiene. He instructed zonal commissioners and public health officials to take stringent action against establishments found disposing of waste indiscriminately.

Ketan Garg advised commercial establishments to store waste in dustbins and hand it over daily to Clean Andhra Pradesh (CLAP) vehicles instead of dumping it on roads or in drains. Officials were also directed to strengthen waste-collection mechanisms and closely monitor CLAP vehicle operations.

Ketan Garg warned that negligence in maintaining cleanliness would not be tolerated and said the enforcement drive would continue.
